Be very careful choosing a website designer!
Website designers are a dime-a-dozen these days... and they come and go like the fog. Anyone can download a program and start calling themselves a website designer. We even joke that we are in competition with 12-year-olds. They may mean well, but these eager beginners don't know what they don't know. Soon they learn that building websites that actually work for the client (rather than just looking good) is more tricky than they thought, making a living building websites isn't easy, and there are a lot of responsibilities toward the client that they didn't expect. As a result, quite often they get bored or annoyed with the whole thing and drift off to new horizons... which sometimes means the demise of the website they built. Be very wary of the kid down the street, or the new website designer in town offers a cheap deal on your new website. You may save a few dollars, and pay a painful price in just a little while. ALWAYS ask to see a portfolio of the websites they have designed themselves. If they only have a few (or if you are the first), politely decline their offer. Your business should not be anyone's guinea pig or learning curve. Also, ask how long they have been in business building websites. If less than 3-5 years, there's a significant risk that they will disappear on you in short order. We routinely get calls from clients who need their websites "rescued" from neglect or abandonment by the prior website designer.

Then there is the opposite extreme. The "Big City" website designers don't even want to talk to you if you don't have a budget of at least five grand or so. They can certainly build you a Taj Mahal of websites. If you need that, great. But small businesses usually do not. Don't pay for way more than you need.
