Please Note: As a Gig Harbor Online member you will have TWO different login IDs. You may have the same password for both your dial-up and e-mail accounts. Your DIAL-UP login ID will be something like rseyourname@surf.net (or world.net or whatever network you are assigned to). The rse in front of your name stands for RS Enterprises, the parent business of Gig Harbor Online. That simply tells the network that you are one of our members.

Your E-MAIL login ID will be simply your e-mail address.

So, a member named Bob Smith might have a configuration like this:

    DIAL-UP login ID/User Name: rsebobsmith@surf.net
    E-MAIL login ID/User Name: bob@gigharbor.com
    E-MAIL Address: bob@gigharbor.com
Password: same for both Dial-Up and E-Mail

Quick E-Mail Setup:
If you are very familiar with your e-mail program and just need to know the basics to get up and running, here you go:
Pop Server: pop.gigharbor.com (or alternate domain such as 1tacoma.com, 1kitsap.com, keypeninsula.com, etc.)
SMTP Server: smtp.gigharbor.com (or alternate domain such as 1tacoma.com, 1kitsap.com, keypeninsula.com, etc.)

Use your FULL e-mail address as your User Name, Login ID (i.e. the example above: bob@gigharbor.com)

Web Accelerator:
We offer a web accelerator program, SlipStream, that will allow you to surf up to 5 times faster than normal dial-up. This service costs $5.00 extra per month. Please contact us if you wish to add this service to your account.

Spam Blocker:
We offer a spam filter service for $1.00 extra per month. Please notify us if you would like this service activated. This filter allows you to set the sensitivity threshold, as well as add your approved e-mailers to a "white list" and noted e-mailers that you do not want to receive mail from to a "black list." Once your spam filter is activated, Click Here to set up your filter.

To further combat spam, you can also setup very helpful "Message Rules" in your Outlook Express by going into Tools, Message Rules, mail. You can set rules to delete messages from any particular e-mail address or with any particular subject or with any particular word in the body of the e-mail message. Other e-mail programs such as Outlook, Netscape, Eudora and Pegasus also offer similar options that will help you control spam.

Combating Spyware & Adware
Spyware and Adware can be added to your computer system without your knowledge, and is known to slow your computer, sometimes change your settings, and even retrieve information from your computer that is forwarded to third parties without your permission. To combat this scourge, we encourage you to download one or more of the anti-spyware and adware programs which will assist you in searching for and destroying such programs that may have been installed on your computer. Some of these programs are free to download.

Personal Web Site:

Please Note: As the majority of our customers never utilize the free personal web site option that comes with their account, we do NOT automatically set your account up with FTP access. Please e-mail INFO@GIGHARBOR.COM to request FTP/USER WEB SITE ACCESS set up. Allow two business days for this set up to be completed.

Following set up on our end, you will be able to access your personal web site area using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client, such as ws_ftp, and the following information:

      FTP Address: ftp.gigharbor.com
      Login/User Name: your e-mail address (username@gigharbor.com)
Password: same as your dial-up and e-mail password.

Your personal web site address (URL) will be:
      http://members.gigharbor.com/your-email-address
      (example: http://members.gigharbor.com/joe@gigharbor.com)

(Note: there is no www in your web site address)

Your home page HTML file should be entitled index.html.

You are alotted 10MB of space for your personal home page. This is a lot of space... enough for over 100 pages of straight HTML and properly sized images. However, keep in mind some image files, music files and video files can be huge. Please use discretion in placing these files on our server. Always configure image files to the actual size they are displayed, rather than placing a huge image file online and coding your HTML to display it smaller.

Note: This free personal web site area is for individual use only. It is not appropriate for business, commercial or complex use.

Running CGI scripts, database applications or other non-HTML-based code is not advisable on our personal web server.

Due to the excessive storage issues that it causes, our personal web site server does NOT support Microsoft FrontPage extensions or upload/download capabilities. It is Dreamweaver compatible.

Instant Messaging:

Instant Messaging is entirely separate from your Gig Harbor Online dial-up or e-mail services. Like other independent ISPs, we do not provide Instant Messaging. There are several instant message services that you can sign up with, most of which are free. ICQ is the original program, now administered through AOL, which also has another program called AIM. MSN and Yahoo also offer very popular programs. Unfortunately, none of these programs work with any of the others. So you must use the same service as whomever you are trying to instant message. Here are links to some of the popular Instant Messaging services:

    ICQ
    Yahoo Instant Messaging
    MSN Instant Messaging
    AOL Instant Messaging

Newsgroup Setup:
Usually you will use your E-mail program (Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, etc.) to set up your newsgroups. Open up your E-mail program and add a new Newsgroup account. (For Outlook Express, click on "Tools", then "Accounts", then "Add", then "News").

Follow the instructions for your particular program. For Internet News Server name, use:
    news.safepages.com

(For Outlook Express, check the box that says "My news server requires me to log on").

Use your dial-up User Name (rseyourname@surf.net or rseyourname@world.net, etc.)

    Use your same password.

You should be all set to go.
